Why Nomiwear Started With a Pair of Glasses That Wouldn't Stay Put
I spent eight years working in eyewear manufacturing in southern China — first on the assembly line floor, then in product engineering. I've bent thousands of temples, balanced thousands of lenses on edgers, and watched hundreds of thousands of frames come off the line. What I noticed was a gap nobody was filling.
The sports glasses we built for export were excellent at one thing: looking like sports glasses. They cost $180 retail, weighed 40 grams, and had lenses tuned for racing — but the people buying them didn't race. They commuted. They worked at desks for nine hours, then rode home in the same pair, then stared at a screen until midnight. And nobody made a frame that did all three well.
So in 2022 I left the factory floor and started Nomiwear with one rule: every frame has to pass what I call the "forget test" — you put it on, and within ten minutes you stop noticing it. That drives everything: the weight targets (every frame under 30g, most under 25g), the lens choices, even the hinge design. A hinge that wobbles after six months isn't a quality problem, it's a comfort problem — it changes how the frame sits on your nose, and then you notice it.
On the lens side, we didn't want to be another brand stacking coatings and calling it technology. So we built the NomiX lens system in partnership with a lens lab that normally supplies aviation optics: photochromic dye compounded into Trivex and polycarbonate bases, polarization laminated inside the lens instead of glued on, and anti-fog coatings we test at 200% of the industry standard's duration. Every production batch goes through the same three checks — a 48-hour salt-spray test on hinges, a 1,000-cycle flex test on temples, and a UV-exposure test that simulates two years of sunlight. If a batch fails any one of them, it doesn't ship.
Our factory is small, 40 people, and we keep it that way on purpose. We can't out-scale the big brands, so we out-test them. The frames you get have been bent, fogged, salted and sun-baked before you ever take them out of the box. That's the whole brand: nothing you'll ever notice, tested harder than anything you'll ever buy.
